EDISON - The township council is launching its own investigation into racist campaign mailers that were distributed to residents shortly earlier the 2017 school lath election.

A Commission of the Whole will investigate the mailers that said "Make Edison Great Once again" while challenge Chinese and Indian residents are "taking over" the town.

Council President Alvaro Gomez has selected three of the vii councilmembers – Robert Diehl, Sam Joshi and Michael Lombardi – to lead the subcommittee for the investigation.

A racist campaign flyer directed at two Edison Board of Education candidates sent to some Edison residents in 2017.

Dressel/Malikschmitt LLP, a New Brunswick law house, was hired as special legal counsel to the committee at a price not to exceed $25,000.

The committee, which was unanimously approved by resolution in February, volition concur its first coming together 7 p.m. Tuesday to investigate the source of the two-sided mailer.

"I have been pushing for this since 2017," Diehl said. "A lot of people were stunned and shocked and really disgusted by this type of flier. We are a very diverse boondocks. We celebrate our multifariousness. We are proud of our diversity. For us to go this type of recognition that painted us equally perhaps a bigoted town or racist town, we want to become to the bottom of this."

Diehl said the council is frustrated by the lack of results from the investigation.

"The local police department said they had to turn it over to the AG's Office (state Attorney Full general's Office)," he said.

Diehl said the council was unable to get information from the state Attorney General's Function and the local police force department.

"In the meantime, the residents never really stopped request what we were going to practice almost information technology." he said. "We gave it enough time and decided a couple of months agone nosotros would look into it ourselves. We exercise believe there is enough information that we can bring some light to this."

Diehl said identifying who is responsible will allow the township and everyone else know that this is something that will non be tolerated.

"What was it? I don't know," Diehl said. "The investigation may uncover that. When yous start these investigations, you lot don't know what you lot are going to find. Sometimes you lot don't find as much as you lot want, other times you find a lot more than you expected. If we detect a lot of information it could exist determined that it was a hate crime, a political stunt or something else."

Joshi said he has wanted to pursue this investigation since taking role in January 2018.

The committee has invited 10 people to provide sworn testimony on Tuesday, including Mayor Thomas Lankey, Law Officer Keith Hahn, Autonomous Chairman Shariq Ahmad, Republican Chairwoman Sylvia Engel, Board of Education members Falguni Patel, Jerry Shi, Beth Moroney and Shannon Peng and onetime Board of Instruction members Paul Distefano and Shivi Prasad-Madhukar.

Subpoenas were expected to be served to Shi, Peng and Ahmad, who had not responded past early Friday afternoon.

An attorney for Patel, who was mentioned in the mailer and was sent an invitation to appear, said she was not going to appear, Diehl said.

She also was expected to be issued a subpoena.

Boosted witnesses may exist be asked to come up to the May 23 meeting, and additional meetings may exist scheduled if necessary.
